"Canyon" Reclaimed 1890s Oak Lath Artwork

"Canyon" Reclaimed 1890s Oak Lath Artwork

"Canyon" - Reclaimed 1890s Oak Lath Artwork

Made from oak lath rescued by the owners and Alan from an 1890s home that was being remodeled in the historic Midtown district in Springfield, MO.

The original rough sawn edges – along with various thicknesses throughout a single board - many quite uneven – along with the criss- cross saw marks and nails holes still remain - evidence of the old building techniques used back in the 1800s were still being used well past the turn of the century.

I have learned that stain and even paint takes to old wood differently than it might on newer wood.
Lath especially - regardless if its oak or pine - seems to take its time absorbing the pigments into its grain, like it wants to pause and ponder just how much color it is willing to accept... nothing more, nothing less.
I begin the process imagining one color and the lath will almost always outperform my expectations.
The resulting color is always a treat to see - sometimes duskier and more subtle - sometimes richer and more brilliant.

I love working with lath and I think you will agree, this lowly old workhorse that was once used solely to shore up our plaster walls is worthy of being saved and given a second look as a viable medium.
