~ Reclaimed 1890s Oak Lath Artwork "Worn Leather" is made from beautiful oak lath rescued from an 1890s home undergoing renovations in the historic Midtown district in Springfield, MO.
The original rough sawn edges – along with various thicknesses - many quite uneven – along with the criss- cross saw marks and nails holes still remain - evidence of the old building techniques used back in the day.
Stain takes to old wood differently than it might on newer wood.
Lath especially seems to take its time absorbing the pigments into its grain, like it wants to pause and ponder just how much color it is willing to accept... nothing more, nothing less.
I begin the process imagining one color and the lath will almost always outperform my expectations.
The resulting color is always a treat to see - duskier and more subtle - like old, worn leather.
I love working with oak lath and I think you will agree, this old workhorse that was once used solely to shore up our plaster walls has emerged a Prima Donna, ready to take the stage a star and steal the show!
Rough Sawn Oak Lath Frame: availability is limited. If we must use another material we will discuss available wood options with you first.
Frame will be finished in an environmentally friendly water based stain:
A multi-step application of several colors that result in this rich, dark brown with more depth.
All new nail holes are filled and hand sanded.
Frame Style: The reclaimed oak lath frame shown in photos features a squared corner frame.
Mitered corners are not available with Lath frames.
All surfaces are finished and sealed with at least three coats of quality clear matte poly finish... with hand sanding between coats for a feel and luster that resembles wax and is neither too dull or too shiny.
The back is neatly finished with brown paper and is signed by artists, titled and dated.

NOTE: Our Reclaimed Wood Artwork is One-of-a-Kind. While each piece will be carefully handmade using the same varieties of reclaimed woods… finished in the same or similar stain and paint colors and techniques...it is virtually impossible to replicate two different pieces of this artwork to look exactly alike.
The reclaimed wood found in our artwork may contain some or all of the following: the original surface saw cuts, wood knots and holes, uneven thicknesses, notches, scraps, crevices, rust stains, nail holes, discolorations and other imperfections or blemishes. Each will be examined on an individual basis by the Seller for its integrity and solidness – and/or may be filled with wood filler, hand sanded to remove splinters or rough patches or left alone to create textural interest.
These characteristics are what make each piece of artwork unique and should not be considered a defect.
However, if one of these features is a concern - please speak to the Seller prior to ordering or at the beginning of the project to avoid delays.
